Team to Run
New York Marathon for Cystinosis Foundation
November 7, 1999

(by Ruth Ann Ahnen)

We have all heard of Leukemia Team in Training and now is our opportunity to run a marathon to raise money for Cystinosis. On November 7, 1999 the N.Y.C. marathon will be run through the 5 burroughs of New York City. My friend Sarah and I (God willing) will be on the starting line running to raise funds for the Cystinosis Foundation. We invite anyone else interested in running (or walking) to join us. Anyone can do it. It takes a little time, perserverance and a commitment to do the training. I will be running on behalf of my 8 year old daughter, Katie, who has cystinosis. She has shown us great courage throughout her illness and now it is my turn to do something for her and others who suffer with it.

I know New York City is a long way for a lot of you but I have a complete list of marathons being run in all 50 states. Pick one close to home. I have a very modest training program that worked well for me when I finished the 1997 Marine Corp marathon in Washington D.C. Anyone can finish. We have the potential to raise quite a bit of money for research and at the same time elevate awareness about cystinosis.

If you are unable to run or walk, how about sponsoring someone who is? We will have a list of all those running/walking and you will be able to pick from these. We would also like to match runners with those that have cystinosis. They will run in honor of these courageous individuals... along with getting to know them through correspondence if desired. A bracelet will be worn by runners bearing his or her name. If you would like to have your child matched with a runner please let me or Jean Hotz know.

Below is a beginning running program to get you started. Further schedules will be available through this web site.
